Viola Davis Wins Our Hearts With Her Moving Speech
If there were a trophy for acceptance speeches, we'd like to hand it to How to Get Away with Murder star Viola Davis. She accepted the award for best actress in a drama series at the Screen Actors Guild festivities this weekend with a moving statement on the changing perception of what a TV star looks like. She thanked the show's producers and creator, Shonda Rhimes, "for thinking that a sexualized, messy, mysterious woman could be a 49-year-old dark-skinned African-American woman who looks like me." After a thunderous round of applause, Davis went on to thank her husband, daughter, and mother"all the people who love me exactly how God made me." It's exactly the kind of unforgettable moment we watch these awards for, and we couldn't agree more with Davis' message.
